Mobile phone to blast into orbit

24 January 2011

It was announced that British engineers were planning to put a mobile phone in space. The team at Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) in Guildford wanted to see if the sophisticated capabilities in today’s phones would function in the most challenging environment known.

Launched later in the year by the Space Shuttle, the phone ran on Google’s Android operating system and was used to control a 30cm-long satellite and take pictures of the Earth.
